Cultural differences and Hofstede five culture dimensions: Comparison between China and South Africa Culture is a broad and profound concept, but mainly refers to the formation of a specific group of members of values, codes of conduct, beliefs, art, knowledge, customs and other habits of the whole. HOFSTEDE’S FIVE VALUE DIMENSIONS OF CULTURE Objectives At the end of this chapter, you will be able to: Explain the differences between Hall’s cultural framework and Hofstede’s cultural framework. Describe five value dimensions of Hofstede. Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory Hofstede is the earliest one trying to use extensive statistical data to examine cultural values, from 1967 to 1973, Hofstede conducted a large-scale survey of cultural values in the famous multinational company IBM (International Business Machines Corporation). 2015-11-28 Hofstede is seen by some scholars as using an outdated definition of culture which ignores effects of globalization and this defeats his overall research objectives. Finally, Hofstede assumed that location does not affect employees’ reactions, which is not the case, as people react differently to different situations and places.

The Power Distance Index (PDI) focuses on the degree of equality, or inequality, between people in the country's society. Amount of Dimensions Initially many argued that 4 or 5 dimensions is not enough to give a sufficient information and feedback about cultural differences. Hofstede agreed to that statement, and noted that it important that the dimensions would be added to his original work (Hofstede 1998, 481). Approach This approach is commonly associated with Geert Hofstede (1984, 1988 & 2001), as described in Schermerhorn and Bachrach (2017). He explored national cultures through the identification of five different dimensions, which are: Power distance; Uncertainty avoidance; Individualism-collectivism; Masculinity-femininity; Time orientation 2015-04-25 Geert Hofstede, assisted by others, came up with six basic issues that society needs to come to term with in order to organize itself. These are called dimensions of culture.

Thus it has appeared that my domestic culture has indeed a lot of influence on my personal culture, when using Hofstede’s 5 dimensions. It also showed that there are a many cultural differences between my culture and the Spanish culture, because it’s more collectivistic, there is a higher uncertainty avoidance, it’s more masculine and it’s more short-term orientated.
